Men of Character

A tribute to the people I met not too long ago…

People say they are “religious” people.
Who don’t enjoy life.
Who don’t know how to find entertainment.

People say they are a bunch of weird people.
Not materialistic.
Fatalistic.
Boring.

But I say they are men of character.

They don’t watch stupid stuff, they’re above that sort of thing!
They don’t pursue girls and entertainment endlessly,
nor laughter at every moment.
They’re not consumed by exams, grades or even reputation,
for their lives are meaningful.

They are men of character.
Blessed with a deep insight and understanding towards life.
Their waking up in the early morning is not a sign of religiousness, but a sign of character.
The things they talk about are not a sign of shallowness, but a sign of character.
Never are they worried about how their lives will turn out to be,
for they are men of character.

They are men of character. Envied by plastics, appreciated by diamonds.
I would never call upon them as a bunch of friends,
but rather as brothers in reforming the world.
And God knows best.

Anas reported that a man was with the Prophet, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, when a man passed by him and said, “O Messenger of Allah, I love this man.” The Prophet said to him, “Have you informed him?” He said, “No.” He said, “Inform him,” and he caught up with him and said, “I love you for the sake of Allah.” He said, “The One for whom you love me has made me love you.” [Abu Dawud]
